Preservation Services Digital Projects Procedures

Step-by-step instructions for tasks done by the Preservation Services Unit: preparing materials for digitization, packing and shipping items to scanning vendors, quality control, and disposition of originals.


Prioritizing materials sent to Preservation Services and then to Document Services:

This example is from the MIT Energy Lab Reports project but could serve as a guideline for future projects, esp. research publications:

(Sept. 09)  For Preservation, our order of preference is based on the amount of time it takes to prep.  Assuming the items have pages in good condition, the order is:

  • Loose, unbound pages
  • Comb bindings with holes in good condition
  • Velobinding
  • Stapled
  • Stapled with tape over staples
  • Then:  ratty stuff, including loose pages with lots of paste-ins
  • No labels
