User Analysis

  • Home owners
  • Shared home users, with roommates
    • This user group focuses on young adults who rent apartments and share the residence with roommates. Although the roommates may have different life style and energy consumption pattern, they usually receive one gross energy bill each month, and evenly split the cost. Many users in this group want to know more fine grained information that correlates to each individual’s consumption pattern.
    • Users in this group can be tech-savvy. They are up to date with new technologies. Many are already familiar with smart phones and tablets, and others can quickly learn how to use them.
    • People in this group are often ordinary users of energy consumption devices. They don’t have detailed knowledge how much different devices consume, but are curious to know. Saving energy and saving money are always welcome in this user group.
  • Business users
    • To accommodate business users, features have to be scalable to larger numbers and different types of devices

Task Analysis

  • Monitor energy consumption of each device, and aggregate consumption

  • View price information received from grid
  • Sell generated power back to utility company
